Rishi Sunak tops first round of voting in UK leadership contest

(VOVWORLD) -Rishi Sunak, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, won the most votes in the first round of voting to succeed Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader and UK Prime Minister.

Sunak received 88 votes, ahead of Penny Mordaunt, Minister of State for Trade Policy (67 votes) and Truss Liz, Foreign Secretary (50 votes). Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi and former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt were eliminated.   

Sunak said on Tuesday that he would run the economy like Margaret Thatcher, the former Conservative Prime Minister, if he becomes the next Prime Minister of the UK, adding that he will cut taxes and will do it responsibly.
