Security tightened outside French Embassy in Niger

(VOVWORLD) - Hundreds of supporters of the junta in Niger dispersed on Monday after two consecutive days of rallying outside the French Embassy in Niamey while security forces have been deployed around the building.

French Ambassador to Niger Sylvain Itte and about 20 more embassy staff members are still inside the building guarded by 200 soldiers.

President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that France's ambassador to Niger will stay in the country despite pressure to leave from leaders of a recent coup. Macron also reiterated France's support to Niger's ousted president Mohamed Bazoum.

On Friday, Niger's junta, which seized power in a coup on July 26, said it had ordered French ambassador Sylvain Itte to leave the country within 48 hours, adding that the actions of the French government were contrary to the interests of Niger.
