Multiple car bombs exploded within minutes of each other as Iraqis were out shopping in and around Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 28 people and wounding more than 80 in mainly Shiite areas. These attacks mainly focused on flea market areas in Baghdad. No group has claimed responsibility for the series of bombings, but the Islamic State of Iraq, a branch of Al Qaeda in Iraq, has vowed to retake lands lost in its the long war with US and Iraqi government forces. Bombings have increased since the beginning of 2013, with the wave of suicide bombings primarily targeting Shiite and Iraqi security forces.
