Soc Trang strives to have IUU fishing yellow card removed

(VOVWORLD) - No case of illegal fishing has been reported in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang in the past year, according to a working session on Thursday between Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien and provincial authorities on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention.

Soc Trang now has 1,000 fishing boats, nearly 400 of them equipped with GPS, said Huynh Ngoc Nha, Director of Soc Trang province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“We have taken drastic measures to prevent IUU fishing. Local fishermen have also been more aware of regulations on fishing, and sea and islands, which helps reduce IUU violations,” said Nha.

Deputy Minister Tien asked Soc Trang province to examine and strictly punish any violations so that the European Commission’s IUU yellow card on Vietnam fishing industry will soon be removed.
