(VOVWORLD) - A delegation led by Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilization Truong Thi Mai on Monday presented gifts to soldiers in Quang Nam province who helped locals mitigate natural disasters.

Ms. Mai said that in 2020, border guards in Quang Nam province had the dual task of guarding the border and helping locals in difficulties. She said she hopes these soldiers will continue to fulfill their duties because the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters in the central region could be even worse this year.
Since last October, the central region of Vietnam has experienced prolonged, heavy rains, storm surge, and strong winds that have caused severe flooding and landslides. In 2020, floods in Quang Nam killed thirteen people and economic losses totaled 470 million USD, according to a government report.
