The two sides discussed ways to stabilize the current serious political situation on the Korean Peninsula. Minister Lee emphasized the need to maintain close policy cooperation between Seoul and Washington before the inauguration of the administration of President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol, as well as work closely to resume dialogue with Pyongyang.

Sung Kim said the United States remained open to the possibility of diplomacy and engagement with Pyongyang, but said Washington would respond to North Korea's provocations through close consultations with South Korea.

During his visit to South Korea, the US special envoy met with South Korean Vice Unification Minister Choi Young-joon to discuss the latest political developments, including last weekend’s missile launch that North Korea announced was a test of tactical guided missile.
