(VOVworld) - An offshore earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the east of the Papua region in Indonesia, injuring at least 62 people, but no tsunami warning was issued. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 1:00 am on Friday, 30 kilometres from the coastal city of Sorong and lasted two minutes. The quake’s epicentre was as much as 10 kilometers below the sea. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho , spokesman for the National Board for Disaster Management said 17 of the injured are in critical condition and predicted a rise in fatalities. He said more than 200 houses were destroyed.
