Thousands of Buddhists make pilgrimage to Indonesia on Vesak Day

(VOVWORLD) - Thousands of monks, nuns, and Buddhists have gathered at Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist relic complex in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, to celebrate Vesak Day (Lord Buddha’s birthday).

More than 40 monks from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia performed the Thudong ceremony, a pilgrimage ritual involving an 80 kilometer journey from Semarang City to Yogyakarta, the capital city of the Special Region of Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

Buddhist groups and associations from South Korea and India also joined the pilgrimage to Borobudur Temple. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend Vesak celebration.

The monks and nuns will continue their pilgrimage to the Muaro Jambi Buddhist temple complex in Jambi City, Indonesia.
