UK seeks to improve ties with Iran

(VOVworld) - The UK's new envoy to Iran, Ajay Sharma visited Tehran on Tuesday for the first time since his appointment and since bilateral ties were frozen between London and Tehran after the UK Embassy in Tehran was attacked by protestors in 2011. Sharma held constructive talks with Iranian Foreign Ministry officials on promoting bilateral ties.

Earlier, Iranian non-resident charge d’affaires in London Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh told the IRA news agency that he will travel to London to try to improve consular services for Iranian citizens, adding that he will also hold direct talks with UK officials. Iranian and UK diplomatic ties were severed after the UK Embassy and its officials’ residential areas were demolished by an angry crowd in November 2011. The attack caused a diplomatic crisis between London and Tehran as UK immediately withdrew all of its diplomatic mission in Tehran and deported the Iranian diplomatic mission from the UK and closing the Iranian Embassy in London.
