UN aid reaches East Ghouta

(VOVWORLD) - A UN convoy carrying lifesaving assistance has entered the besieged Syrian enclave of Eastern Ghouta, reaching local civilians for the first time since a Russia-brokered ceasefire took effect one week ago.

The 46-truck convoy was loaded with food parcels, nutritional supplements, and some medical supplies. A senior UN official accompanying the convoy said shelling could still be heard at the East Ghouta checkpoint despite the ceasefire. As many as 400,000 people are trapped in the enclave, which is suffering from severe shortages of food and medical supplies.
