Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, said on Thursday that the reported escalation in fighting exacerbates an already dire humanitarian and human rights situation as well as the suffering of the Yemeni people.

That day Iran denounced the international community's "inaction" while Saudi Arabia carried out what it called "atrocities" against Yemenis.

Saudi-led coalition warplanes resumed air strikes against Houthi rebels in Sanaa on August 9, the first since the ceasefire between the government and Houthi rebels took effect on April 11.
