UN Security Council mulls resolution rejecting US’s Jerusalem recognition

(VOVWORLD) - The UN Security Council is considering whether to render all decisions about the status of Jerusalem void, just days after US President Donald Trump acknowledged the city as Israel's capital.

The document, drafted by Egypt, stresses that Jerusalem is an issue "to be resolved through negotiations" and expresses "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem," without specifically mentioning Trump's move. It says “any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition" of Jerusalem "have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded.". The draft resolution also instructs member states not to establish diplomatic missions in Jerusalem, in accordance with UN Security Council’s Resolution 478, and not to recognize any actions or measures contrary to the resolution.

On Saturday, two Danish nationals were wounded in a knife attack in Gabon's capital apparently committed in retribution for the US's decision on Jerusalem. The same day, around 1,000 people attended a rally in Frankfurt protesting President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
