At Wednesday’s meeting on the threat posed by terrorism to international peace and security, the UN Security Council sought to understand why such groups conduct terrorist attacks and attract supporters. The UN has called for greater mass media communications on countering terrorist activities.
The meeting said terrorism, in all of its forms and for any motive, is a crime which threatens international peace and security. Counter-terrorism campaigns must respect every state’s political independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and abide by the UN Charter. The UN Security Council called on all countries to implement the United Nations’ global strategy to fight terrorism. The defeat of terrorism can only result from the sustained, comprehensive participation and collaboration of all states and global and regional organizations in the UN’s global counter-terrorism strategy.
