UN warns of disease threat in Lybia’s flood-hit Derna

(VOVWORLD) - The UN warned Monday that Libya’s flood-stricken city of Derna, where thousands were killed a week ago, is facing the threat of disease outbreaks that could lead to a new devastating crisis.

Traumatized residents, including 30,000 who are currently homeless, are in urgent need of clean water, food, and basic supplies, as there is an increasing risk of cholera, diarrhea, dehydration, and malnutrition, said the UN.

Teams from nine UN agencies have been on the ground for the past few days, providing aid and support to those affected by Storm Daniel and the flash flooding, said the UN Support Mission in Libya.

A flash flood, which occurred after Hurricane Daniel hit Libya on September 10 resulted in over 20,000 people dead or missing. UN organizations, including UNICEF, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the World Food Program (WFP), have dispatched teams to Derna and surrounding areas to assist the survivors.
