(VOVworld) - US Ambassador to ASEAN Nina Hachigian expressed concern about China deploying fighter jets to Phu Lam Island in Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, where earlier this month it deployed HQ-9 surface-to-air missiles.

At a press conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday, Ms. Hachigian said these actions are increasing tensions in the region and are counterproductive.
Earlier, U.S. officials said 10 Chinese jet fighters flew over Phu Lam Island. Analysts say China is installing high-frequency radar on Phu Lam Island, along with airstrips and other facilities on artificial islands it has constructed in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.
