US, Chinese defense chiefs meet to improve ties

(VOVWORLD) - US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told China's Defense Minister Wei Fenghe that improved high-level relations between their countries will reduce the risk of unintentional conflict.

Mr. Mattis and Mr. Wei met on the sidelines of an Asian security conference in Singapore in an effort to normalize military relations. The talk lasted 90 minutes and was described by Mattis as straightforward and candid, but no new agreements were produced.
The Pentagon’s top official for Asia-Pacific affairs, Randall Schriver said the discussion covered numerous issues but focused on the disputed East Sea, where China is increasing illegal military activity. China did not immediately comment on the meeting.
