US court to consider keeping Trump off 2024 ballot

(VOVWORLD) - On Monday, a court in Denver, Colorado, opened a hearing on a lawsuit filed by a group called Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics against former President Donald Trump for his involvement in an attack on January 6, 2021, on the US Capitol in Washington, DC.

The lawsuit argues that Trump should be disqualified from running in future elections under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which states that no person can hold federal office if they participate in insurrection or rebellion after taking an oath to support and defend the Constitution.

Trump's legal team has denied allegations that he incited violence, stating that it would set a dangerous precedent to remove a candidate based on legal theories that have never before been tried by a state or federal court. The hearing is expected to last a week.

Trump is facing similar lawsuits brought by advocacy groups in Michigan and Minnesota, but the Colorado case is the first one to go to trial.
