US’ internal controversies over Israel-Palestine issue - ảnh 1
(VOVworld) - White House chief of staff Denis McDonough has reiterated the US government’s policy to pursue the Israeli-Palestinian peace process based on a two-state solution. At a meeting Monday with Jewish-American in Washington, McDonough said the Obama administration has made a great effort toward this goal, considering it the best solution for peace and stability in the Middle East. McDonough said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent ruling out of a Palestinian state defies US policy, which opposes the construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory. In a televised address last Sunday, Republican Senator and Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain said if the US supported UN resolution calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, the US Congress would re-consider its funding for UN activities. McCain said it’s time for the White House and Congress to set aside their disagreements and work with each other to resolve the critical issue of its ally Israel.
