US optimistic about potential diplomatic breakthrough with Hamas

(VOVWORLD) - CIA Director William Burns told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials at a meeting on Wednesday that the US is optimistic about potential of diplomatic breakthrough with Hamas.

Burns emphasized that ending the conflict in Gaza should be a transition point toward potential normalization, suggesting the prospect of improved relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

But Israeli leaders expressed staunch opposition to Hamas's latest proposal, asserting that it is categorically unacceptable. Israeli officials conveyed their concerns to Burns regarding the impact of the US' decision to withhold certain weaponry from Israel.

The same day, Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi held a phone talk with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussing the efforts to prevent the worsening humanitarian disaster in Gaza and Israel's attack on Rafah, south of Gaza.

Secretary Blinken expressed his continued appreciation for Jordan’s leading role in facilitating the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.
