US ready to negotiate unconditionally with Iran

(VOVWORLD) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that Washington is ready to negotiate with Tehran without preconditions.

Pompeo made the remark at a joint press conference with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis, where he also noted the US will continue to put pressure on Iran to restrain its actions. This is the first time the US has mentioned unconditional talks with Iran since last May, when President Trump abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said the same day that abiding by the 2015 nuclear deal is a crucial condition for any negotiation with the US. Mr. Zarif said Iran does not need any mediating country, but the US needs to end the economic war it started against Iran.
