(VOVworld) – The Republic of Korea, the US, and Japan began their joint naval exercise called Sarex on Monday to the south of Jeju island, involving the US Navy aircraft carrier USS George Washington. This naval search and rescue exercise is held once or twice a year for humanitarian purposes.

Last week, the US and the Republic of Korea jointly conducted a naval exercise involving the USS George Washington and Korea’s warships to the south of the Korean peninsula.

In another development, Yonhap news agency reported that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is preparing a military drill in the western city of Nampo to retaliate against the US-RoK exercise. Yonhap quoted the Seoul government as saying that this might be a national-level drill bringing together its ground, naval, and air forces.
