President Thuong called for further cooperation to boost two-way trade and investment based on the Vietnam-Australia Enhanced Economic Engagement Strategy (EEES).

Vietnam encourages Australian investment in energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, finance and banking, high-tech agriculture and education, President Thuong said.

While highlighting cooperation in peace keeping missions, he urged closer coordination to prevent transnational crimes and illegal migration, and handle terrorist groups and individuals who may use the Australian territory to launch sabotage acts against Vietnam.

Governor-General Hurley suggested that both countries implement the MoU on the Australian agriculture visa program, and encourage more Vietnamese students to Australia and more Australian tourists and students to Vietnam. He said he will continue paying close attention to creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in Australia.

The two leaders agreed to increase consultations and coordination at regional and global forums and reiterated the importance of peace, stability, and navigation safety, security, and freedom in the East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea).

They agreed to join forces with other countries to build a stable and prosperous region which respects national sovereignty and the rule of law.

Vietnam and Australia established diplomatic ties in 1973, comprehensive partnership in 2009, enhanced comprehensive partnership in 2015, and strategic partnership in 2018.

After talks, the two leaders visited the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations where President Thuong underlined the valuable support of the international community including Australia for Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping missions.

Governor-General Hurley said the Vietnamese peacekeepers have demonstrated their quality and dedication and Australia is proud to provide equipment and help Vietnam in training.

“We have a lot of experience in peacekeeping but we can always learn. And I know that members of the Australian defense force have learn from you,” Mr. Hurley said, praising the Vietnamese peacekeepers’ professionalism.
