Vietnam backs use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam supports the IAEA's initiative to apply nuclear science and technology to serve civilian activities for peaceful purposes, said Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien.

Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien, Governor-Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) led the Vietnamese delegation attending the IAEA Board of Governors’ regular meeting this week in Vienna.

Kien emphasized the IAEA’s equitable approach to nuclear safety and security, and upholds the principle of dialogue and peaceful settlement of disputes based on the UN Charter and international law.

The Vietnamese delegation joined discussions on the meeting’s agenda and contributed to the 2023 report on security, safety, and nuclear technology. Vietnam reaffirmed its consistent strategy and policies in support the IAEA’s key missions: Safety and Security, Science and Technology, and Safeguards and Verification.

On the meeting’s sidelines, the National Action Center for Toxic Chemicals and Environmental Treatment representatives met with leaders and representatives of international organizations and partners to promote cooperation on peaceful applications of nuclear technology, including the IAEA Nuclear Sciences and Applications Department, the Secretariat of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
