Vietnam earns first gold medal at Special Olympics World Games in Germany

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam on Wednesday won its first gold medal at the Special Olympic World Games in Berlin, Germany, when Nguyen Chau Hoang Phuc triumphed in bocce, a ball sport closely related to British bowls and French pétanque.

Phuc, 24 years old, beat Molefe Katso of Botswana in the final to earn the medal.

The Vietnamese sports delegation to the tournament comprises six athletes, competing in athletics, swimming, and bocce.

The Special Olympics World Games is the world's largest sporting event for athletes with mental disabilities, autism, or cerebral palsy.

The Special Olympics oath, spoken at the opening ceremony last Saturday, is “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the at- tempt”.

The Special Olympics World Games, born in 1968, is not yet widely known.
