Mr. Dung told reporters that Vietnam worked with the host Philippines and other ASEAN members to specify top priorities for ASEAN Year 2017. Vietnam actively contributed ideas to ASEAN’s documents and successfully performed its role as the Chair of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration group. During the Summit, Vietnam focused on promoting ASEAN’s solidarity and the ASEAN community, Dung said, noting that Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc suggested ASEAN give top priorities to building a people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN, enhancing the effectiveness of ASEAN performance, and promoting intra-group cooperation and regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc discussed measures to deal with non-traditional security challenges, especially climate change and piracy, and expressed his concern about escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula, and in the East Sea, and the East China Sea. Mr. Phuc said ASEAN needs to uphold basic principles and maintain a common view on resolving disputes through peaceful means and on the basis of international law.
