(VOVworld)- The Vietnamese delegation at the United Nations has sent a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to ask for the circulation of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic note to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. In the note, Vietnam protests China’s continuous violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over its Exclusive Economic Zone according to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to which both Vietnam and China are signatories. Vietnam resolutely opposes China’s argument that the location of the oil rig Haiyang 981 is in the so called Xisha island and once again affirmed that the Xisha island that China mentioned is Vietnam’s Hoang Sa or Paracel archipelago which China illegally occupied in 1974. Vietnam demands China immediately withdraw its oil rig Haiyang 981 and escort ships from Vietnam’s exclusive economic zones and continental shelf and refrain from actions that impact security and safety of navigation as well as peace and stability in the region. The note also protests China’s statement that Vietnam designated 57 lots of oil and gas exploration in disputed sea areas, seven of which have been put into operation, and installed 37 drilling platforms. Vietnam affirms that China has no legal basis to back this claim and Vietnam resolutely opposes this wrong statement. Vietnam affirms that all of the country’s oil and gas activities have been conducted totally within Vietnam’s continental shelf in line with provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Vietnamese diplomatic note states that after China withdraws its oil rig, the two countries will discuss measures to stabilize the situation and sea-related issues. The Vietnamese delegation at the UN asks the UN Chief to circulate this note as an official document of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly.
