The statement was made at the eight political consultation meeting between Vietnam and Singapore that concluded on Friday. The Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh had an exchange with Singaporean Foreign Ministry.

At the 2-day meeting, both countries agreed to further strengthening high-ranking visits and delegations of the two National Assemblies, Parties, and people exchange. They affirmed to work closely with each other to prepare for Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong's visit to Vietnam in September. Both also agreed to boost cooperation in defense, security, and in the areas which have been specified in the strategic partnership agreement.

Vietnam and Singapore discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, spoke highly of solidarity, and upheld the central role of ASEAN in regional cooperation. The two nations shared the common view that ASEAN should take more responsibilities in key matters in the region including the East Sea issues for peace, stability, and development. Both agreed that the next round of political consultations will be held in Vietnam next year.

While in Singapore, Deputy Minister Vinh paid a courtesy visit to Foreign Minister K.Shanmugam and held talks with Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chee Wee Kiong.
