Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines discuss East Sea issues

(VOVworld) – A dialogue on East Sea issues was opened yesterday by the Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand (FCCT), attended by representatives from Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand and about 100 international reporters. Doctor Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, Vice Director of the Center for East Sea Studies of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, reiterated Vietnam’s stance that all related parties should base sovereignty claims in the East Sea on international laws, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and settle their disputes in constructive and cooperative spirit for regional peace and stability. Henry Bensurto, Head of the Commission of Maritime and Ocean Affairs of the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs, shared Vietnam’s view on peaceful dispute settlement in the region. Kavi Chongkittavorn of the Research Institute of Strategic and International Studies of Thailand’s Chula Longkon University, said ASEAN and China should step up efforts to complete the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and sit down for negotiation with a more flexible attitude.
