Vietnam, US deepen relations

(VOVworld) – In its White House Letter feature on May 16, the New York Times ran an article called “Obama in Vietnam will focus on future, rather than the past”. The article said President Obama’s visit offers an opportunity to help solidify not only his promised pivot of American policy toward Asia, but also to deepen economic and security ties with an increasingly important regional player.

Mr. Obama is more likely to hail cooperation between the two countries to clean up the remnants of Agent Orange, one of the wartime issues still important to Vietnam. Vietnam reserves approximately 500 million USD as a monthly allowance for the people and areas affected by toxic chemicals every year. The US government has helped Vietnam to clean up the environment and clear unexploded bombs and landmines.
