(VOVworld) – Vietnam and the US should enhance cooperation in defense manufacturing.
Deputy Defence Minister Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and Michael Walter Michalak, Senior Vice President for the US-ASEAN Business Council, agreed on the initiative at a meeting in Hanoi on Wednesday.
The two agreed that relations between Vietnam and the US have improved in recent years through sharing their experience in UN peace keeping and cooperating in humanitarian rescue work, natural disaster response, and maritime security and safety.
But their current cooperation in defense manufacturing falls short of the potential, according to Vinh.
Michalak shared Vinh’s view and said the US will organize a delegation of American defense businesses to visit Vietnam to explore cooperation opportunities.
The two said they hope President Obama’s visit to Vietnam in May will boost bilateral ties.
