Vietnam, US issue joint statement to enhance comprehensive partnership

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited the Vietnamese Embassy and several Vietnamese agencies on Wednesday before wrapping up his visit to the US.

Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh said the embassy’s staff will continue to help promote and deepen Vietnam-US relations for the benefit of the two peoples. PM Phuc asked the staff to listen to the wishes of Vietnamese community in the US in order to submit suitable policies to the government. He praised the activities of the Embassy, the Voice of Vietnam bureau, the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnam Television, and the representative office of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and called for their further efforts to promote Vietnam-US relations.

Vietnam and the US issued a joint statement on enhancing the comprehensive partnership between the two countries on the occasion of PM Phuc’s visit. On Wednesday, in the White House, PM Phuc held talk with US President Donald Trump on an agenda for Vietnam-US relations, on a basis the positive momentum of the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries. The two leaders emphasized that many opportunities lie ahead for Vietnam-US relations, including increasingly enhanced political, diplomatic, economic and trade ties, and ever-growing cooperation in the areas of science and technology, national defense and security, education, people-to-people exchange, humanitarian, and regional and international issues of mutual concern.  They committed to pursuing these opportunities under an enhanced Comprehensive Partnership, in respect for the United Nations Charter and international law, each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and respective political systems.

PM Phuc and President Trump pledged to strengthen bilateral defense ties under the 2011 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Advancing Bilateral Defense Cooperation and the 2015 Joint Vision Statement on Defense Relations. They also discussed measures to expand cooperation in such prioritized areas as humanitarian cooperation, war legacies, and maritime security. The two leaders stressed the importance of human rights and the connection between human rights and each country’s security and sustainable development. The US praised Vietnam’s efforts in improving law system to protect and promote human rights.

PM and President Trump also expressed their concerns about other regional and international issues, including the East Sea and climate change response.

The two leaders opened a bright future for the enhanced Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership and committed to making it deeper, more substantive, and more effective to better serve the interests of the two peoples, and to better contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
