Fans gathered at the French Embassy in Hanoi to cheer the French team, July 15, 2018.

More than 1,000 people gathered at the French Embassy in Hanoi to watch the live broadcast of the match.

France’s Ambassador Bertrand Lortholary said: “It was an unforgettable night for the French team, the French nation, and all who love France. It was so great 20 years ago when I took to the street in the Champs-Elysees to congratulate the national team. This time I’m in Vietnam and feel happy to celebrate the team’s second victory.”

After 2 decades, the French team re-gained the top position in world soccer. Ms. Hang, a fan from Hanoi, said: “The match was thrilling. Both the French and Croatian teams played well but the French team was luckier and won the championship.”

The month-long tournament saw 32 teams play 64 matches. Croatia’s Luka Modric won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament. England captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot after finishing as the World Cup's top scorer. The next World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022.
