World Congress of Esperanto ends in Hanoi

(VOVworld) - Over 1,000 delegates from 62 countries worldwide attended the closing ceremony of the 97th World Congress of Esperanto (UK 97) in Hanoi on Sunday. Under the theme: “Esperanto-bridge for peace, friendship and development”, the congress reconfirmed the importance of Esperanto, which is built on the ideals of peace, friendship, and mutual respect. During the 5 day event, there were a variety of activities, including teaching Esperanto, symposiums, contests of eloquence, presentation of international certificates of Esperanto and cultural exchanges. Esperanto editions of Kieu Story and Dang Thuy Tram's diary were introduced.

Nguyen Huu Loi, Chairman of the Vietnam Esperanto Association, addressed the closing ceremony: “Esperanto has connected us. Esperanto is a bridge of hope, happiness, fairness, and humanity between nations, continents of Asia, Europe, Africa, America and Oceania. We should join hands to build a stronger and larger bridge of Esperanto to link humankind’s noble dreams.”

On the occasion, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan presented the Friendship Order to the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) for its contributions to Vietnam ’s national liberation during the war. The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations conferred insignias for peace and friendship between nations to 8 Esperanto experts from other countries.

The event was jointly organised by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, the Vietnam Esperanto Association and the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA).
