WTO chief steps down amid global economic crisis

(VOVWORLD) - Roberto Azevedo, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) officially stepped down on Monday, cutting his second term short by one year.

The Brazilian career diplomat’s second four-year term was scheduled to end in September 2021. The unexpected resignation came amid the ongoing global economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

8 candidates from Egypt, Kenya, Mexico, Moldova, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and the Republic of Korea are vying to succeed Azevedo. The voting process for the position is expected to begin on September 7 and may last 2 months.
