2017 Nobel Prize laureates in physics and their bonds with Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - 3 American scientists won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Physics. Their detection of gravitational waves, which earned them the Prize, was earlier presented at the “Meeting Vietnam” science event in Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh province.

On October 3, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the Nobel Prize for Physics 2017 which went to American Professor Rainer Weiss along with scientists Bary C.Barish and Kip Thorne. They received the honor for their detection of gravitational waves and vital contributions to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO).

The laureates’ bonds with Vietnam started 20 years ago. They are friends of Professor Tran Thanh Van who initiated “Moriond Meeting” and “Blois Meeting” in France for young scientists around the world. At a science event, Professor Barish accepted Professor Van’s invitation to visit Vietnam for the 2nd “Meeting Vietnam” in 1995, when the world’s leading scientists were gathering to see the total solar eclipse.

18 years later, Professor Barish returned to Vietnam for another event where he talked about gravitational waves. Professor Tran Thanh Van said: “After establishing the International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education in Quy Nhon in 2013, we invited Professor Barish and his wife to Vietnam for a science event. That conference was also attended by several Nobel laureates”.

The International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education and the organization of “Meeting Vietnam” events have attracted more of the world’s leading scientists and helped promote Vietnam’s science and education across the wider world.

Tran Thanh Son, Deputy Head of the Center, said: “The “Moriond Meeting” initiated by Professor Tran Thanh Van in 1996 has been attended by many Nobel Prize winners. We hope that the International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education will continue to be a venue for scientists around the world and motivate Vietnam’s young scientists”.

“Meeting Vietnam” 2018, to be held in Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh province, is expected to welcome the physicists who have won the Nobel Prize this year.
