Hanoi begins countdown to SEA Games: 31 days to go

(VOVWORLD) - Thousands of Hanoians attended a ceremony of a 31-day countdown to the SEA Games, the largest sports event in Southeast Asia, at Ly Thai To Monument and around Hoan Kiem Lake.

The Games featuring 40 sports with 526 events will take place from May 12 in Hanoi and 11 neighboring provinces and cities. At the countdown launch ceremony, Chu Ngoc Anh, Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee, said that after 19 years since the 22nd SEA Games, Hanoi is again honored to host the opening and closing ceremonies and be the venue for multiple competitions.

“Today's launch ceremony is important as it affirms the commitment to organize a safe SEA Games, leave good impressions on global and regional friends, and promote the image of the friendly people of Vietnam. It will also affirm the position of Vietnamese sports regionally and globally,” said Anh.

Le Thi Hoang Yen, Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, reiterated readiness for the much-awaited event.

“All preparations for the SEA Games have entered the sprint stage, including upgrading infrastructure facilities, decorating ceremonies, and training the athletes. All districts of Hanoi and other localities hosting the SEA Games are ready. The opening and closing ceremonies planned by the Hanoi People's Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism promote the image of Vietnam and a stronger ASEAN community,” said Yen.
