Vietnamese sports delegation ranks 18th at ASIAD 19

(VOVWORLD) - The ongoing 19th Asian Games, ASIAD 19, in China will continue until Sunday. The Vietnamese sports delegation of 330 athletes is competing in 31 of the 40 games. So far the Vietnamese athletes have won 1 gold, 3 silver, and 13 bronze medals, ranking 18th on the medal tally.

Shooter Pham Quang Huy won a gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event. This is the first gold medal for Vietnam shooting in the history of participating in the Asian Games.

Pham Quang Huy shared his feelings after his victory: “I have a mixed feeling of happiness and feeling moved. When I competed, I didn’t worry or feel emotional even though this was my first ASIAD final competition. I focused on my shooting.”

Shooters Pham Quang Huy, Lai Cong Minh, and Phan Cong Minh brought home a bronze medal in the men's team 10m air pistol event. Shooter Ngo Huu Vuong won a silver medal in the men's 10m mobile target rifle event.

Gymnastics and Chinese chess are two more highlights of the Vietnamese sports delegation at ASIAD 19.

Nguyen Van Khanh Phong won a silver medal in the hanging hoop event with a total score of 14,600.

Vietnamese chess players Lai Ly Huynh and Nguyen Hoang Yen won a silver medal after being defeated by the host team China in the final of the mixed men's and women's event.

Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang won a bronze medal in the men's 800m freestyle event and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Hoang said: “I’m very happy to be the first to win a medal for the Vietnamese swimming team. My goal was to go beyond my ability and the result earned me a ticket to the Paris Olympics. It’s the dream of any athlete.”

In the 11 previous Asian Games, Vietnamese athletes have won a total of 181 medals, including 11 gold medals.
