Voluntary blood donation movements have been organized in Vietnam since the 1990s.

Donated blood has met the basic needs of emergency treatment in the wake of natural disasters, epidemics, and serious accidents.

Every year, hundreds of outstanding blood donors have been honored.

Vu Minh Cuong of Krong Buk district, one of the outstanding individuals of the voluntary blood donation movement of Dak Lak province during the 2013-2023 period, said he was quite nervous when he first donated blood.

“When I found that my health was still good, I continued to donate blood and have mobilized other Youth Union members to follow suit,” said Cuong.

In the first half of this year Vietnam received 720,000 donated blood units, which helped save tens of thousands of patients in need of blood transfusions.

Vietnam has targeted 1,470,000 blood units for the year, said Vu Thanh Luu, Vice President of the Vietnam Red Cross Society.

“To increase voluntary blood donations, communications should focus on honoring model individuals. Honored blood donors will be the best advocates for the movement,” according to Luu.
