(VOVworld) – A ceremony took place in Quang Ninh province on Tuesday to mark World Food Day and the 69th founding anniversary of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Entitled ‘Family Farming - Feeding the world, caring for the earth”, this year’s World Food Day spotlights the particularly important role of family farming and small household producers in reducing poverty, ensuring food security and nutrition, improving living conditions, managing natural resources, and protecting the environment towards sustainable growth, especially in rural areas.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh says this year’s event is of particular significance to Vietnam. To help farmers increase their income from agriculture, the Vietnamese government is stepping up the sector’s restructuring, with a focus on applying more science and technology and rearranging production towards strengthening value chains.

Mr. Doanh says: “To successfully implement agricultural restructuring, we should reinforce the role of households in production to match the specific conditions of each locality and pay more attention to rural women who are contributing greatly to family farming and ensuring food security and nutrition. Women are oe of the keys to the success of poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Marking this occasion, FAO representatives presented awards for a national writing competition to highlight the important role of Vietnamese women in family farming.
