At a dialogue last week with fishermen in Khanh Hoa province Minister Hoan pointed out the challenges faced by Vietnam’s fisheries during a slower-than-expected recovery of the global economy with the significant decrease in global consumer demand for aquatic products.

While seafood exports are projected to reach 9 to 10 billion USD this year, the country’s fisheries will encounter numerous obstacles in achieving sustainable and responsible development, he said.

“Conservation must go hand in hand with economic development. There is no reason why we cannot change. Fishermen are not just seafarers but also serve as tour guides, showcasing to the world that Vietnam is home to fishermen who understand the necessity of protecting the ocean while shifting towards tourism," said Minister Hoan.

To support fishing villages with a potential for tourism development, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will ask local authorities to provide infrastructure support, particularly reliable clean water and electricity.
