Lam Dong province has 10,000 hectares of durian. Vo Huu Long, Director of the Long Thuy Production and Trade Company in Loc An commune, Bao Lam district, said the durian market is quite stable.

The price of durian has risen since the growing area received a registered identification code.

“Now that we have an identification code for the growing area and adhere to the good agricultural production practices (VietGAP) standard, our selling price is 86 cents higher than the market price. I recently signed a contract for 6,000 tons of durian grown in the certified growing area,” said Long.

Dak Nong, another Central Highlands province, is establishing growing areas for durian, passion fruit, mango, and avocado. Several of the areas have been granted an identification code for export purposes.

Bui Phu Ton, Director of the Nghiep Xuan Import-Export Trading Company in Dak Nia commune, Gia Nghia city, said creating a supply chain has increased the company's profits when its products are sold abroad.

“The market prefers items exported through channels which  require codes for growing areas and packing facilities in compliance with set standards," said Ton.

Nguyen Thi Tinh, Deputy Director of the Dak Nong provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the Plant Protection Department has granted Dak Nong 38 codes for growing areas and packing facilities.

To get a growing area code, farmers are required to update farming methods and control quality. Dak Nong is pushing export supply chains and certified growing areas.

“To build a growing area, it’s necessary to establish a source material area and ensure origin traceability. Establishing a certified growing area enables us to know where a crop was grown, who grew it, and what process was used,” Tinh explained.
