Leaders of Tay Giang, Dong Giang, and Nam Giang district have met once a year since 2017 to seek measures to escape poverty. They have recently created a project to connect their districts to develop tourism, big tree forests, and medicinal herbs.

According to Bling Mia, Chairman of the Tay Giang district People’s Committee, the northwestern region, which accounts for half of Quang Nam province’s total area, is suitable for growing big trees. “Growing trees requires better roads to connect communal centers with growing areas. Forestation in line with the certificate of effective forest management for businesses also requires connectivity between localities where forests have grown,” Bling Mia said.

The climate and soil in northwest Quang Nam is ideal for medicinal herbs. A Lang Mai, Chairman of the Nam Giang district People’s Committee, said growing medicinal herbs under the forest canopy can contribute to forest protection and boost the incomes of ethnic minority people. “Locals are already growing medicinal herbs. What we need to do now is to increase the scale to create a material growing area. This was included in the provincial development plan but hasn’t received adequate investment,” according to Mai

Similarities in culture and an immense primeval forest are advantages the Tay Giang, Dong Giang, and Nam Giang can use to develop community-based tourism and eco-tourism. They are engaged in cooperative projects for tourism development.

According to Le Tri Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee, the cooperation of the three districts to develop tourism, big tree forests, and medicinal herbs is an effective strategy for to sustainable poverty reduction. Thanh said: “Quang Nam authorities are working on a development plan for all provincial mountain districts in the 2021-2025 period with a vision to 2030. Determination and practical ideas are crucial factors for its success. We intend to mobilize social resources, create consensus among locals, figure out farming methods suitable for the region, and design policies to lure investors.”

Effective cooperation by the three districts sets an example for other districts in their search for sustainable development and improvement of local economies.
