Promoting women’s role globally

(VOVworld)-The 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament opened on Monday in the United Arab Emirates, attended by representatives from some 50 countries. The Vietnamese delegation is led by National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s participation at the summit is to cement ties between Vietnam and the UAE, strengthen cooperation within the Inter-parliamentary Union and contribute to expanding the role of women in global issues.

United to promote world peace, security and sustainable development

The annual Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament began in New York in 2005 to increase gender equality, expand women participation in politics, empower girls and reduce violence against women and children. Though the proportion of female parliamentarians has doubled to 22% over the past 20 years, there is still room for improvement.

Vietnam takes the lead in gender equality

Vietnam is one of the countries most rapidly closing the gender gap. 25% of Vietnam’s National Assembly deputies are women, one of the highest proportions in the world. Many Vietnamese women hold important positions in the state apparatus and excel in social affairs and business. Ethnic women have also played a greater role in education and health care.

“What really impressed me in Vietnam is the role of Vietnamese women. They can do everything. I think women is the back bone of the economy, stability and security of Vietnam”, said former UN Coordinator in Vietnam Pratibha Mehta.
Sierra Leone parliamentarian Rosaline J. Smith, who was in Hanoi in 2015 for the 135th Inter-parliamentary Union Assembly, shared her view: “I think Vietnam is doing well in terms of women in parliament. I can see the President is a woman and you have many women in prominent positions, and many women in the legislative and executive bodies.”

At the UAE Summit themed “United for Shaping the Future”, Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan will share Vietnam’s experience in ensuring gender equality and join her international counterparts in intensifying the fight against inequality.
