47 killed in Baghdad bombings

Two car bombs and a roadside bombing shook the Iraqi capital of Baghdad yesterday, claiming 47 lives and wounding 105 others.

According to Iraqi police, two of the bombs were detonated near a crowded café in the Zaffarani area of the city, causing 31 people dead and 56 injured. Another of the bombs exploded near a renowned restaurant in Sadr city of east of Baghdad, killing 16 people and wounding 49 more. Shiite Muslims account for the majority of the population in both areas, indicating that they could have been the target for Sunni insurgents who have carried out many similar attacks in the past.
