ASEAN Zone matches in AFC Cup to be cancelled amid COVID-19 fears

(VOVWORLD) -Fixtures in the Southeast Asian (ASEAN) Zone for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2021 involving Vietnamese representatives Hanoi FC and Sai Gon FC will be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic worsening throughout the region.

According to the latest announcement made by the AFC on Monday, games in the ASEAN Zone, including Groups D, G, H, and I, of the AFC Cup 2021 will be called off due to no country being eligible to host the tournament.

This comes after Singapore refused to organise the event on May 20 and declined to host concentrated facilities for Groups H and I.

Following this, the AFC then tried to find a new location but were unable to do so because every country in Southeast Asia is currently being badly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With this cancellation, both Hanoi FC and Sai Gon FC will have more time to prepare for the remaining fixtures of the V.League 1 season, while their international footballers can also prepare for the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
