The project is part of a joint effort between the Vietnamese Government and Humane Society International (HSI).

Participants discussed challenges and proposed solutions for elephant conservation in Dong Nai and the country as a whole.

They presented their views on piloting elephant conservation towards harmonious coexistence; promoting community involvement to prevent conflicts between elephants and humans; the monitoring of elephants by using camera traps; and recommendations for localities with elephant populations.

The pilot program provides accurate totals on the number of individual elephants in Dong Nai province, consolidating the conservation of this special species.

Tham Hong Phuong, HSI's country director in Vietnam, said with the organisation’s new research data, it is possible to approach human-elephant conflict situations based on an understanding of specific characteristics, behaviors, ranges, and habits of relevant individual elephants.

This can lead to developing suitable and feasible solutions that promote a more effective harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants.
