The defendants were convicted of the murder of five people and the attempted murder of 100 others during violence that broke out in Giza on July 14 last year, following the army's toppling of former president Mohamed Morsi, a senior member of the group. The defendants were also charged with terrorism, inciting crowds, and carrying weapons and illegal ammunition. Badie is facing more than 30 trials with a series of charges ranging from terrorism to inciting violence. In June, Badie and 182 MB members and supporters were condemned to death in a court in Egypt’s southern city of Minya. Badie has already been sentenced to life terms in two other separate cases for inciting violence and blockading traffic.

A government crackdown on Morsi supporters since his removal has left at least 1,400 people dead in street clashes and 16,000 jailed. More than 200 of them have received death sentences. The Egyptian government has accused the MB of conducting attacks and bombings that killed 500 policemen and soldiers. The MB denies the accusations.
