All borders will be closed until further notice and state institutions were dissolved, the group announced. They claimed that the recent general election lacks credibility, adding the government was irresponsible, resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos.

The group have declared themselves members of the committee of transition and the restoration of institutions. Local news outlets said loud sounds of gunfire could be heard in the capital, Libreville.

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba is currently under house arrest in the capital Libreville.

European Union defense ministers are to discuss the situation in Gabon the same day, said High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. He said this is a big issue for Europe and urged defense ministers to have a deep thought on what is going on in West African countries and how they can improve their policy in respect with these countries.

French premier Elisabeth Borne said France is closely following the developments in Gabon.

Meanwhile, China called on all sides in Gabon to proceed from the basic interests of the country and the people, resolve differences through dialogue, and restore normal order as soon as possible. China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin urged parties to guarantee the safety of President Bongo, and uphold national peace and stability.

The African Union planned an urgent meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gabon.
