But party chiefs in the coalition on Monday said that the current gloomy atmosphere will not negatively affect the government, especially when Germany was trying to enact pension and energy reforms.

After Agriculture Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich of the Christian Social Union (CSU) resigned late last week over his handling of confidential information regarding a looming inquiry into SPD lawmaker Sebastian Edathy, who was on a customer list for kiddy porn, the party convened an extraordinary conference and nominated Christian Schmidt to take over the post. Christian Schmidt is the Parliamentary State Secretary for the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

CSU chairman Horst Seehofer called on the parties involved to quickly restore trust. As scheduled, leaders from the three parties - the CDU, the CSU and the SPD – met on Tuesday evening in order to discuss how to move forward.
