The measures were discussed at yesterday’s conference to launch the National Power Saving campaign by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Hanoi.

Climate change and El Nino phenomenon have caused drought and prolonged water shortage and sharply reduced water flow to hydropower reservoirs across Vietnam, which greatly affects hydroelectric power plants. The capacity and output of wind power plants also decrease due to poor wind conditions, which only reaches 5.6% of installed capacity.

Dang Hoang An, Deputy Minister of Indusry and Trade, said: “The Ministry of Industry and Trade respectfully requests ministries, sectors, businesses, households and people from all walks of life to share the difficulty of power shortage and synchronously implement measures for economical and efficient use of electricity, especially in the dry season from now to the end of June. We recommend businesses having reasonable production plans, limiting the use of machines with large electricity consumption capacity at peak hours, and installing on-site renewable energy generators to reduce electricity consumption from the national grid. Households and individuals are encouraged to use electricity economically and efficiently.”
